One Minute a Day
Stacey Lei Krauss is my teacher and the creator of the willPower Method. She advocates holding plank position for one minute a day.
One.
Minute.
A.
Day.
She says, “If you do nothing else for yourself — if you don’t make it to the gym, if you don’t go for a run, if you have NO TIME to workout — do plank for one minute.”
I’m a big fan of this, and here’s why. A one-minute plank is:
One minute of structural alignment and isometric strength training.
One minute of stillness, engagement, and breathing.
One minute to check in with yourself, to notice how you’re feeling, to notice where you feel strong and where you feel shaky.
That’s a lot of value in a little sliver of time. And it is always, always possible to find one minute for plank.
I think my first plank was around 10-15 seconds. It felt like forever.
It’s ok to start small. Build on it. Start where you are, even if it’s just 10 perfect plank seconds. Add 5 seconds next time, until you’re able to hold it for one whole minute.
Technique matters. 30 seconds with proper alignment is better than 60 seconds with poor form. You can find out all about proper plank technique here.
And when you want to show off your plank, take a picture and send it to World Plank .
